As a Virtual Assistant, I get to work behind the scenes with some fabulous and inspiring business owners, people who are passionate about what they do, but who also recognise they don’t have to do it all alone.

I wanted to create a Client Spotlight series to shine a light on their stories: what led them to hire a VA, the tasks they’ve chosen to delegate, and the real impact it’s had on their business (and their peace of mind!).

This month's spotlight is on Gerry Moss, from Jay K9:

Tell us about your business – what do you do and who do you help?

Jay K9 is a specialist dog training service focused on the dog sport of Mantrailing – where a dog and their handler work together to follow a specific scent trail and locate a hidden or missing person. We work with pet dog owners who want to enjoy an enriching activity with their dogs, as well as operational handlers across Bedfordshire, the UK, and Europe. Alongside this, we also provide training and behaviour support for pet dog owners who want to build better relationships with their dogs.

What inspired you to start your business?

Like many trainers, it all started with my own dog – a reactive one – and a passion for understanding behaviour. That curiosity grew into years of studying, qualifications, and eventually running group training classes and working with behaviour cases. I’ve been doing this for over 15 years now. In 2019, I discovered Mantrailing and completely fell in love with it. I'm incredibly fortunate to now be able to call this my full-time job.

What made you decide to work with a Virtual Assistant?

While I love working with dogs and people, I’ve never enjoyed the admin side of running a business. Despite being a bit of a control freak, I knew something had to give. I brought Paula in to take over the bits I didn’t enjoy – especially the repetitive admin – so I could focus on the parts of the business I love and actually get a bit of downtime too.

What tasks or areas do I support you with?

Bookings and money – two things I really dreaded. I hated chasing payments and sending booking confirmations. Because I rushed through them, I often made silly errors. Now that Paula handles it, not only does everything run more smoothly, but we’ve pretty much eliminated careless mistakes too!

How has working with a VA benefited you and your business?

I get to do more of what I enjoy and less of what I don’t. If something pops up while I’m out teaching – often covering 30+ kilometres in a day – I can just ask Paula to sort it. I no longer feel like I’m juggling 20 million things in my head. By the time I get home, admin’s already off my plate. The business feels much more balanced, and working with Paula is just so easy.

What would you say to someone thinking about hiring a VA?

Absolutely go for it – just try it. I was really nervous at first about letting someone else communicate directly with my clients, but Paula’s been amazing. Once I got comfortable with it, I realised how much smoother everything runs. Now, I don’t even think twice about it.
